Jon Heyman is mad as hell

It appears as if my piece on Jon Heyman's curious distaste for Luis Castillo was picked up by a baseball blog and passed on to Heyman himself. As you can see below, he reacted to my speculation with the combination of bemusement and indignation one would expect from someone painted into a corner:

Thanks to @phylan for grabbing this exchange
To clarify, Jon (if you are reading this), obviously it would have been unreasonable for anyone to expect you to admit that you harbor a deep-seated--perhaps subconscious--racial bias when it comes to how you report and comment on players. To be honest, it wasn't even my intention to definitively label you a racist.

The problem is that when you hold such divergent opinions of two players whose on the field production is nearly identical, you invite speculation about your motives. If it clearly has nothing to do with their production, then it must be personal. And if it is personal, then it damn well might be racial.

The bottom line: if you are going to leave the door wide open for speculation, I (and others) will be more than happy to oblige you by walking right in and making myself at home.

P.S. Sorry to hear the bad news about your favorite restaurant. There's always Chick-Fil-A.

  1. Just an observation: Beginning any dialogue with "you're a flaming racist" is a poor way to go about getting any sort of comment on the piece. The way that person accused him is reckless and irresponsible. Even if Jon responded, to get him to respond to allegations that he's a racist after being rudely accused of being one is a tall task.

I also agree with Jon's take about @dj_mosfett's comment. Saying "at least" in that context is just as accusatory as calling him a racist. Granted, it was a much better way of going about it, but it probably became more of a pride thing at that point. At least, that is how I would have handled the situation.

Honestly, I don't read much of Jon's work, but I don't see this as being a good example of racism. Personally, I prefer Eckstein over Castillo, but that's more due to the much-scrutinized on-field play of Castillo in the past 2 years with the Mets. He is no longer capable of playing on a major league level. Eckstein has always been a scrappy player that I happen to appreciate, so I, too, would say go with Eckstein over Castillo.

I also witnessed the dropping of the pop-fly that game against the Yankees. That will be forever ingrained into my memory. That, to me, is the reason I can point to as to why I would rather have Eckstein.

I'm looking for other instances of 'flaming racism' from Jon Heyman on google but I can't seem to find anything. Is this really the only thing that is out there? A few twitter posts?

  2. Again, if you read the posts, you will know that I didn't call him a "flaming racist", nor was I the one who engaged him via Twitter.

Rather, to repeat what I said in this post, when you hold such wildly divergent opinions of two quite similar players, you invite speculation about your motives. I was presenting the evidence and offering a possible theory that could explain his distaste for Castillo.
